Symptoms

Pharyngeal cancer can be difficult to detect in its early stages. Because there are no routine tests for pharyngeal cancer, it may not be detected until the disease has progressed.

Some pharyngeal cancer symptoms are specific to the region in the pharynx where the cancer occurs. A tumor in the nasopharynx may cause nosebleeds or ringing in the ears, whereas a tumor further down the throat, in the hypopharynx, may make it difficult to swallow.

Other symptoms of pharyngeal cancer that are common for all types include:

• Chronic sore throat
• A lump in the nose or back of the mouth, throat or neck
• Ear or jaw pain
• A change in voice, or unusual hoarseness
• Difficulty breathing
• Ringing in the ears
• Frequent nose bleeds
• Headaches
• A dull pain behind the breastbone
• Persistent cough
• Painful or difficult swallowing (dysphagia)
• Unexplained weight loss
