Guidelines for Whole Body Bone Scan Patients

• Fasting is not required for bone scan.
• The duration for nuclear scans is 45 – 60 minutes. The patient is expected to lie on a couch in supine position. If patient is in pain, please inform the doctor for instruction on medication and pain relief.
• Please drink plenty of water 5 – 6 glasses (prior to scan)
• Remove all valuable and metallic objects i.e. hairpins, coin, belt with buckle etc. The scan has no effect on vascular clips / prosthesis / metallic implant
• Pass urine frequently in designated earmarked toilet and empty bladder 10 minutes prior to reporting time for scan.
• Please pass urine carefully to avoid spillage on clothes / body / toilet floor. In case spillage occurs please clean your body (hands etc.) with soap and water and change clothes, if necessary.
• If patient has a catheter with urobag, please empty urobag in earmarked toilet.
• Do wait following the completion of scan until you are told that the scan is completed.
• Avoid close contact with children < 12 years or pregnant women for 1 day following the scan.
• Pregnant women should not undergo the scan, if pregnancy is in doubt get pregnancy test done.
• Lactating mothers should avoid breast feeding for 2 days after scan.
• Children to undergo Nuclear Scan only, if advised by referring doctor.
